Swedish Candela continues to make waves in the marine industry

Swedish boat manufacturer Candela continues to make waves in the marine industry with its innovative electric hydrofoil boats. By integrating cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and luxury design, Candela is pushing the boundaries of modern boating. The company’s mission focuses on creating a new standard for water transport by drastically reducing energy consumption, extending range, and delivering a smoother, more efficient ride. These advancements make Candela boats more eco-friendly and set them apart as pioneers in cleaner, greener water transport. With these innovations, Candela is well-positioned to lead the future of sustainable marine travel, offering both environmental benefits and a luxurious boating experience.

Hydrofoil Technology: The Core of Candela’s Success

At the heart of Candela’s innovation is its hydrofoil technology. Hydrofoils are submerged, wing-like structures that lift the boat out of the water as it gains speed. This dramatically reduces drag and increases efficiency. As a result, Candela boats, like the flagship Candela C-8, can travel much farther on a single charge compared to conventional electric boats. For instance, the C-8 has a range of 50 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 22 knots. This far surpasses the capabilities of most electric boats on the market.

The boat’s propulsion system, the C-POD motor, is another critical factor in Candela’s efficiency. This in-house developed motor features twin counter-rotating propellers submerged underwater. It provides a silent, nearly maintenance-free driving experience. With this design, the boat glides smoothly and quietly above the water, significantly reducing both noise and environmental impact.

The P-12 Ferry: Transforming Public Transport in Stockholm

Candela is making significant strides in public transportation with its P-12 electric ferry. Selected as part of a pilot project by Region Stockholm, this ferry is set to revolutionize waterborne public transport. Using the same hydrofoil technology as Candela’s recreational models, the P-12 lifts out of the water to reduce drag, increase range, and cut energy consumption by 80% compared to traditional vessels. With a top speed of 27 knots and a range of 60 nautical miles, the P-12 offers a sustainable, cost-effective alternative to diesel-powered ferries.

A Greener Future for Stockholm’s Transport

In the Stockholm archipelago, where waterborne transport plays a crucial role in the city’s infrastructure, the P-12 ferry is poised to make a major impact. It could significantly reduce road congestion while drastically cutting emissions. By 2024, the P-12 will begin operations, offering a faster, quieter, and cleaner alternative to existing transportation options. This project not only demonstrates Candela’s commitment to sustainability but also reflects a broader shift toward eco-friendly urban transport systems.

Candela and NEOM: A Visionary Partnership

In addition to its public transport initiatives, Candela has announced an exciting partnership with NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s visionary megacity. As part of this collaboration, Candela will supply its flying electric vessels to NEOM, aligning with the city’s ambitious goals for sustainable and futuristic transportation. This partnership is a significant milestone for Candela, positioning NEOM as one of the first regions to integrate these state-of-the-art electric boats into its transport infrastructure.

The competitive landscape: Hydrofoil and electric boat market

Candela may be leading the charge in hydrofoil and electric boat technology, but they aren’t the only innovators in this space. Navier, a U.S.-based competitor, is developing the Navier 27, a hydrofoil electric boat similar in concept to Candela’s C-8. Additionally, traditional boat manufacturers such as Sea Ray and Quintrex are beginning to integrate hydrofoil-inspired designs to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. While these brands may not yet offer fully electric boats, they are part of a broader trend toward more efficient, environmentally-friendly marine transport.

    A glimpse into the future

Candela’s electric boats and ferries represent the future of sustainable marine travel. With their C-8 excelling in the recreational market and the P-12 ferry set to transform public transportation in Stockholm, Candela is proving that electric hydrofoil technology is a revolution in the making. As urban centers look to reduce congestion and emissions, the success of projects like the P-12 ferry could pave the way for similar implementations in other cities worldwide.

If you’re curious to experience Candela’s groundbreaking hydrofoil technology firsthand, the company offers a test drive of their electric boats. This is an exciting opportunity where you can witness the smooth, energy-efficient performance that has made Candela a leader in the electric boating world. The test drive allows you to feel the boat’s ability to “fly” above the water, offering an almost silent ride with minimal drag and no wake.

You can sign up for a test drive through Candela’s official website and get a personal, up-close look at how hydrofoil technology transforms the boating experience. To schedule your test drive and read more, visit Candela.
